Hi, I'm new! I have operated a small cat rescue group since 1992, in our home. We have 2 FeLV+ cats - we keep them separate from the 5 FIV+ cats (all are asymptomatic), because I don't like to expose them to more than they already have to deal with. We've had good experiences with allowing FIV+ cats living with healthy cats, as long as they get along well! I get the healthy cats tested periodically, spot-checking, and not a single one has ever contracted the virus. But I only do that with cats that are not up for adoption. I can't the chance of anything going wrong such as an adopted cat that lived with positive ones possibly infecting an adopter's own cat. We do not use the FIV vaccines because the danger is that should a cat like that get lost or abandoned by owner, it would test positive for the disease and would automatically be killed by many ACs and rescue groups. Maybe you can check archives on co-mingling if you want to see that information. Because the FeLV+ cat has a compromised immune system, it is important to protect that cat from anything contagious going on with the other cats (eg URI). He said there is too much risk. I have 7 other cats that are all healthy and I would love to be able to have them all be together but I'm afraid. I wouldn't want the healthy ones to get sick. I would feel so responsible. ---- dlg...@windstream.net wrote: > Theresa, if you felv kitty is lonely, ask your vet about mixing him with your other cats. my veet said that as long as hey are up on their shots, it is okay and mine have been mixed for 2 years now with no problems. sure does make everyone happier. > ---- brooklynnat...@charter.net wrote: > > I live in Black Mountain NC and would be more than happy to give him a home. > > I'm really not too familiar with how things are done here but I have a male that > > I rescued from outside that has feline leukemia and I keep him separated from my > > other cats.
