I've seen this entirely too many times. Healthy animals being PTS because selfish people don't want to deal with them anymore. Their reasons for murdering their pets are varied........ "We want to travel and can't be bothered with the cat". "The cat leaves hair on my new sofa", and the latest one is "the litter box stinks". I asked her how often she scoops and she dodged the question. Her ex said she never scoops! It's hard not to hate people like that.
