Anyone who's ever read the submission requirements for the current crop of publications will know that you get no heads up before doing the research - and that they DO send out many confirmation slips for receipt of material without ever publishing it. It is terribly naive of the people who always respond "if you just write to them, they'll listen and respond" - publishing has always been a hard business. Rejection slips abound. And the magazines really do choose what they print - not the other way around. If the content is poor or shallow it does NOT necessarily reflect the situation that there is no material out there or that there are no people willing to write particular types of articles.
