It's interesting to me that, during a period when the
list has seemed extraordinarily quiet to me, a topic
that inspires people to post is the relevance and/or
quality of fiber magazines. I have some of the same
reactions that others have already expressed.
I no longer subscribe to anything other than Vogue
Knitting (and that only because one of my students was
selling mag subscrips for a fundraiser and VK was the
only one remotely interesting to me). However, I do
always browse the racks at B&N and often buy the most
recent issue of whatever, AFTER I've scanned it for
interesting articles or patterns that I can use as
inspriration (since I don't actually *follow*
patterns). I haven't really noticed a universal trend
towards dumbing down (although there are certainly
mags that cater to a less sophisticated readership,
but that is true in every field and genre). Although
I no longer need to read certain articles myself, I
remember when I did, and how disappointed I would have
been if they had not been available.
What is ironic to me is that IF I were bothered by the
mags, I would have the same complaint about this list.
The fact is that I've been a Fibernetter for so long
that a lot of the posts I don't read past the first
line or two because I've been there, done that
(numerous times in some cases). Fortunately I am not
bothered by this; it's just the nature of the beast.
I get new insights often enough from the list to make
subscribing worthwhile. I don't have time to post
often myself, but I would miss all of your posts (even
the ones I don't read!) Plus it makes me feel a part
of the greater communal web... pun intended.
