Cathy I weave and embroider and have curated exhibitions and taught
fiberarts of all kinds .Displaying Woven works requires different
solutions than embroidered works. It also depends on the way it is
finnished , in displaying place and even on displaying goals.
I also have seen (and touched) , some very amtique cloths .

Yes but embroidery adds to the Pull of the woven cloth and if done with
different or same material it adds to the "terms of hanging', because of
different reactions to dry and wet weather ,,,,

I have followed several embroidery `expert framers, over several years,
for a research i did on "classes teachibng Handcrafts" at least soime of
them who handled about a 100 + embroidered framings, made mistakes when
framing Woven stuff , because they thought like you that it should be done
along the same lines, Most woven work should Not be matted at all ,,,
Ps when opening Old framed embroideies, where the framing was done before
WW2, there was much dammge done by the way it was pot on a paper
background, in every work i opened .
