If you were told you could wash the sheepskin, it's probably going to be
just fine. I have one under my desk in the office; the cats sleep (and
occasionally donate a hairball or two) on it, and in winter, at least, my
shoe-clad feet are on it. I throw it in the washing machine whenever it
starts looking especially dingy or matted (or whenever the cats have
provided a particularly juicy hairball!). I use regular detergent, and warm
water, and I don't let it do a full agitation cycle - instead, I let it soak
for a bit, then run the agitator for a few minutes, let it soak again, then
agitate and spin out, and rinse the same general way.

I don't put it in the dryer, but let it dry draped over a chair outside if
the weather is conducive (in Southern California it almost always is!), or
over the shower-curtain rod inside if not. I sometimes lose a little bit of
fleece fuzz in the washer, but nothing significant at all, and the results
have always been a much cleaner, fluffier sheepskin rug!

I would really, really be scared to put a sheepskin into the microwave. I
envision the leather scorching... eek!
