Veering off topic a bit (I'm finding this interesting, though it certainly presents more questions in my mind than it answers!) -- when it was mentioned that one characteristic of "primitive" breeds is molting, I wondered if anyone could answer a question about my little cheviot sheep, though they wouldn't be considered "primitive".... I lost my shearer (a tragedy to say the least) and can't get another one until May 12th. In the meantime, many of my sheep are losing much of their fleece -- starting with the back, so that they have this "friar tuck" thing goin' on. Some have now lost most of their fleece. Though I'm sad to lose the fleece, I'm kind of interested in what's going on here.... I've heard of sheep "rooing" but don't know if that's what I'm seeing. We have had an awful, wet NW winter, and I know there are lice, and so treating everyone with Eprinex. But I'd think if that were the problem they'd be rubbing and their sides would show wear/loss of fleece..... any comments would be welcome! The younger sheep don't seem to be affected -- just the older ewes and the older ram.
