Rich,

For future reference, you could have done much the same thing with much less trouble by selecting the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option when installing Panther. There is rarely any need to wipe a drive clean -- *especially* if you're just going to copy apps and prefs back afterwards (instead of reinstalling from the original CDs and rebuilding your prefs from scratch).

Also, I suspect it's not a bug, and that Finale's "call home" code is based on your computer's Ethernet ID or something similar. So perhaps Mac users don't need to obtain a new registration code even after a complete reinstall.

However, I'm not planning on testing this hypothesis right at the moment.

I recently upgraded to Panther (from Jaguar) by wiping the drive clean and starting from scratch, and I didn't have to get another code or call MM. What I had done was clone the drive first, then copy most of the apps and prefs - including those for Finale (2004b) - onto the fresh system. If I recall correctly, it didn't work at first - it actually wouldn't launch - so I trashed my prefs file (EEK! lost all program prefs!). Then it launched in trial mode. From there I think I chose "register" in the help menu, perhaps reentered my serial number, and that was all.

So, if you don't care about redoing your preferences, then you could try that. I would advise against it, but figured I'd chime in with my story anyway, for the record.

Maybe my experience was a fluke. Probably a bug, considering.

Dear sirs at Mac Support and also

for those of you (in the list) who are using 2004 on a Mac:

I am going to buy an iBook in the near future, and I wonder if the copy
protection scheme has been improved in the 2004b revision.

If I reformat my hard disk to reinstall Panther, do I have to contact Coda
to register again?

Is the copy protection based only in the Ethernet card address?

Can I easily transfer my registration to the portable?

Thanks for any help...
