I agree with Jonathan and Harold,

As with Harold, I hate to get involved in this discussion because every time it comes up it seems to get so volatile (IMO) due to a lack of understanding and experience with the lyrtic tool but I thought I would submit my favor for the CORE logic of the lyric system. [...]

It seems to me that several people here are arguing there is nothing wrong with Finale's Lyrics because it works just fine for them. And yet in the very same message they mention a variety of special do's and don't's that they've picked up over years of experience.

I too have been using Finale for many many years. I too have no problem getting all the results I want with no snafus. But that doesn't mean the system is fine. You and I make Lyrics work well because we've learned the peculiar ins and outs of the system. Those who are coming to Finale for the first time are liable to have difficulties. If we insist that the system is OK because it works for us, I think that's rather uncharitable to the newbies.

I, who have complained about the lyrics, can work with them just fine, too, because I have come up with a working method which I can live with.

It doesn't involve type into score at all, since whenever I have used that and had to go back and change things due to operator error during entry I have gotten into a royal mess.

So I can now do all that I want to with lyrics. Could I outline my process to a beginner? Probably, with difficulty on my part and great confusion the part of a newbie. If I were a newbie trying to find my way through the lyrics tool for the first time, would I be able to sit down and enter lyrics without great gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair? Probably not.

Lists of do's and don'ts which resemble the rules of cribbage in order to work are not really the characteristics of a well-designed, smoothly working mature product, in my opinion.

I am sure that many of us who have been working with lyrics for many years have our own working methods (David Fenton has come up with his, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't tell novices who ask him for advice "Don't use type into score.") that allow us to get the proper result on paper.

But it should certainly be possible to redesign things so the need for a large list of Dos and Don'ts isn't necessary.
