Well, one good thing about the MacIntels is that it shouldn't be too hard to set up a dual-boot OS X/WinXP machine. I don't relish running Finale under Windows -- in fact, I would consider that a *terrible* non-solution to the challenge of the Intel switch and fervently hope MM doesn't abandon the Mac platform -- but it sure beats having to switch to Windows altogether.

I think, the real question is whether the amount of money put into the conversion to Intel Macs will pay back in a given time (the time does depend on the long term policy of the company). In the case of Finale, from all I have heard, the effort to convert to Intel is huge. Apparently larger than the move from OS9 to X. Given that that change took MakeMusic longer than almost any other software developer I do have some doubts - but also some hopes.

To be honest, I don't really blame them. It's partly Apple's fault for having two such huge changes (three if you count the move to the PPC chips) in a relatively short time. Personally I think Apple should have gone "dual-processor" when they introduced OS X. Publically, that is, not secretly as they did.

For myself I have decided to use my iBook until it becomes too outdates (in 2-3 years?) and then rethink. By that time either I know that Finale will be going MacIntel, and I will also know whether the Mac platform has caught up in Audio Editing (ie if there is a Mac alternative to SeQuoia). If either of these questions will be answered with "no", then I will leave Apple. It's something I am not looking forward to, but it is also the last time I can make that decision, before I invest too much into a platform that doesn't support the kind of software I need.
