I just got one of these printers from a used printer warehouse in
Indianapolis. I've gotten it to work flawlessly with Finale in terms
of two-sided printing and booklet printing, but I do have a few
questions. Since I note that several of you use this printer, I
thought I'd ask here:

1. The printer appears to be vintage 1997 or so. I paid $375 for it
with the duplexer and an extra toner cartridge. Did I do OK or was I
overcharged?

I am now on my second HP5si. They're a really good, reliable printer. My previous one had done over 900 000 copies before giving up the ghost - well, it may have been serviceable but it's not much more expensive to get a replacement unit now. Maybe your service costs are cheaper in the US.

Considering the toner cartridge costs $$, your price is probably about right.

Did it come with a lot of RAM? I bumped mine up to 44MB or so and now it will do A3 double sided at 600 dpi.

3. What sorts of problems have you had with your 5si MX? What issues
should I know about, or what should I expect to break one day after
my 90-day warranty expires?

My duplexer has run into problems - I can't duplex without paper jams. However that may be a function of the paper itself (HP paper manufactured in Brazil... I hope that it doesn't come from the Amazon).

5. What maintenance tips do you have?

Again, you'll find that it likes certain types of paper, but not others. Otherwise, it's a reliable printer, considering its age.
