When I add editorial dynamics (i.e. such "p" or "f" that were obviously meant but got left out by the composer) I seem to have an issue with alignments.  I put them in brackets or parentheses in a hanging format but somehow it always looks unattractive. Typically the composer always would have a dymanic mark in the first violin and or cello, so I need to add two more (in the 2nd violins and violas). Typically, this happens 90 percent of the time at the start of a new measure.

It looks even worse when there is a grace note that's starting the measure too.

Anyone have any suggestions on a way to make such a layout look nicer?
I have posted a sample here  : http://www.bytenet.net/kpclow/finale/dynamics.jpg

Is it the collision of the left bracket with the forte mark that you are asking about?

I would create this marking as a shape expression, where you can manually adjust kerning, so as to get the spacing right. Then you can use the shape as a note or staff expression.

You can adjust the default positioning (maybe handle positioning) so that the F part of the marking lines up identically to the F without parentheses. It will take a bit of trial and error, but once it is set in your default file, you never have to touch it again.

You might still have to nudge them left if there is a grace note. I don't suggest attaching a dynamic as a note-attached expression to a grace note, as it will get smaller with the grace note, so you would attach it to the main note, then nudge it left.

BTW, I notice that your dynamic markings are in green. I don't know whether the default colours are the same in your file, but that would seem to indicate that you are entering these as staff expressions. I would advise you to enter dynamics as note expressions instead (using metatools), saving the staff expressions for tempo, rehearsal marks, and the like. The relatively recent option of automatic expression placement makes note-attached dynamics ever so much more efficient than they used to be, and they will place themselves properly when instruments don't start exactly at the same time, or if there are ledger lines below the staff. I have had to add a couple of EVPUs to the default distance in my case, but now they position themselves 90% of the time correctly, only requiring an arrow nudge when there are other items around it.
