I have had a look around for various font converters, they're not
cheap, especially as all I require it for is this one font.
I think is disgraceful that there has been no backup or information
from Don Rice on this subject. I was not the only person who paid good
money for the Golden Age font set. As a professional copyist he must
have realised that there would soon be countless scores and parts
containing his font. It is irresponsible of him not to have either
provided an update or passed the project on to someone who could
continue providing basic support.
This has made me very wary of purchasing any other music font not
provided by the application's designers. In fact, Golden Age was a web
link from the Coda/Make Music site for many years indicating that they
must have had respect for the font and its compatibility etc. It would
be nice if they could now provide a little support in the matter.
Who can you trust?
I'm sure that people who own Ramblers and Hudsons feel the same way
about those companies' lack of support. :-)
The placing of a product in the marketplace in no way is any guarantee
that there will be an infinite amount of support of that product.
How much would you be willing to pay for a new version of Golden Age?
Perhaps if Don Rice knew that everybody who bought the original font
were willing to pay all over again (sort of the way we do when we want
an upgraded version of our automobile) he might be willing to do something.
On the other hand, perhaps he sold a certain number of copies of his
font and noticed music coming from many more people with his font than
he had sold copies to. Microsoft is enough of a juggernaut corporation
who overcharges enough on each sale that piracy, while it irritates
them, won't sink them. But for a private individual simply trying to
make a buck, piracy would certainly be discouraging enough to simply
hang it up and quit.
In any event, there was no guarantee on Don Rice's part that he would
provide support and continued upgrades forever. Every manufacturer
reserves the right to withdraw products from the market.
I understand it is very frustrating for you, but you seem to be taking
your frustration out on the wrong person. Whose fault is it that Apple
changed the font specifications? Don's or Apple's? If Apple had
somehow included legacy support, you wouldn't be having this problem.
But Apple, in typical corporate hubris, simply didn't give a flying f#$k
for people like you (or Don, for that matter) and said, "We're changing
the specifications simply because we feel like it and because we can."
So whose fault is it that you can no longer use Golden Age?
Be sure you put blame where it properly belongs.
Hesitating to reply to my own reply, I feel it important to point out
that people have suggested ways around your problem. It sounds as if
you don't want to pay that sort of money, which then raises the question
of how important continued use of this font is for you?
