Here are some Wikipedia articles that may help clear up some of the
confusion around Intel's product lines:
The Intel Core Solo and Core Duo products (currently used in all Macs
except the Mac Pros) are code-named "Yonah":

These chips were replacements for the Pentium M. They are 32-bit
chips. The Core Solo chips are your standard vanilla single processor
(only the low-end Mac mini uses the Core Solo). The Core Duo versions
are dual-core (i.e., two processors on a single chip), but cannot be
further combined in multi-processor configs. iMacs, Mac Books, and
Mac Book Pros all use Core Duos.
The next generation of these chips (i.e., two generations removed
from Pentium M) come in three varieties, codenamed "Merom," "Conroe,"
and "Woodcrest."

These are all 64-bit chips. Apple chose the "Woodcrest" -- i.e., the
Xeon 5100 series -- for the Mac Pro line. The reason for this is, as
I said, the Woodcrests support multi-processor configs, which is
something Apple has a large and longstanding investment in supporting.
Both "Conroe" and "Merom" chips are marketed as "Core 2 Duo," even
though they have more in common with Woodcrest chips ("Xeon 5100's")
than Yonah chips ("Core Duo").
Apple does not currently use any "Conroe" or "Merom" chips, since
they were only just released (July 27, 2006). Tyler is basically
complaining that Apple has not revised its entire product line all at
once to take advantage of Intel's new chip offerings. Apple is a
much smaller company than Dell or HP and is simply not capable of
refreshing their entire product line in one fell swoop. Apple will
certainly be adopting "Conroe" and "Merom" chips in its portable and
consumer lines, to replace the "Yonah" chips it currently uses, but
expecting them to do all that less than two weeks after the Merom/
Conroe/Woodcrest family is released is insane. They decided to
concentrate on *one* product -- the Mac Pro -- for the launch of the
new chipset. The others will follow.
