Unless PopChar has changed since OS 9, one big problem I had with it
was that it always displayed in the same tiny point size, making
useless for music fonts, and not all that useful for the unusual
characters I had to find. It was no better than the Keyboard Viewer
that comes with OSX, I found.
Does it have a zoomable view now?

Chuck is right on! PopChar is always in the corner of your menu
bar, and when you select the character, it pastes it in place. No
other interaction needed. It's one of those really indispensable
utilities.

There is a little utility called PopChar by Ergonis software ($15,
I think) that comes in PC and Mac versions that I find handy for
this purpose. It puts a little tab in the menu bar that accesses
the font chart for any installed font. Every once in a while, I
need to create something I've forgotten in Finale, or I need an
umlaut or French accent. This makes those things easy.
