Lots of vendors give stupid advice. On the Windows side of thing, the usual (stupid) advice is "reinstall Windows", often after reformating your hard drive. This is almost never necessary, and takes an inordinate amount of time even without the reformat. There are only a certain subset of problems that a new installation will actually solve, so it really is dumb advice, and usually offered with no sympathy whatsoever for the user's time and effort in rebuilding the system. On the other hand: I've been doing PC support professionally since c. 1990, and the more I see, the more I think that sometimes the systems have become so complex that they behave in ways that appear chaotic. So, I do practice a bit of "voodoo troubleshooting," sometimes recommending trying things that I don't really think have anything to do with the problem. I have also considered when going to a client whether or not I should carry with me a live chicken, so that I could cut off its head and sprinkle the blood on the problematic computer. Sometimes the advice I'm giving seems equally connected to the problem at hand. -- David W.
