While this is true enough, if you keep a clean copy of your preferences nearby and simply replace the current prefs, it makes life a lot less painful. You can also trash the prefs WITHOUT emptying the trash (or just drag it to the desktop) and if that doesn't solve the problem, then just drag the file back again.
