About the preferences file, to be more precise, claiming the preferences
file is corrupt is pretty common for tech support in Fin12. But my
professional software developer's nose smells a rat on that little game,
especially with a problem like this. Most such claims merely provide an
excuse not delve deeper and find the real problem, meanwhile putting those
of us who tweak the preferences at a severe cost of additional labor.

And indeed, trashing the prefs file makes (essentially) no difference with
this problem.
