Being that it was Xdarwin that I had before, in all it's glory, and
that it is IT that I've been after all this confusing time
(Not-to-mention that it had been the last working rootless (full
screen, desktop, and all) x-window environment I had launched
successfully on this machine (which stopped launching when I installed
Fink), I tried to install it again (having first installed, then
deleted Apple x11 because according to the most recent salvo of
information I had read, one could Not have both Apples x11 and xDarwin
at the same time).

I went ahead (after uninstalling System-xfree86 -- which left THREE
x11-system folders in the SW folder, BTW -- and replacing it was
xfree86-base --again, according to documentation and emails), and tried
launching XDarwin again.

Counsel kindly reveals the gruesome outcome (BTW, startx was not a
recognized terminal command):
----

I have No idea how to change the Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix to root, and
when I tried to remove the aforementioned tmp file I received the
following response:

greghyde% sudo rm /tmp/.X0-lock
rm: /tmp/.X0-lock: No such file or directory
[blueDog:~] greghyde% cd tmp
tmp: No such file or directory.
[blueDog:~] greghyde% cd / tmp
cd: Too many arguments.
[blueDog:~] greghyde% cd tmp/
tmp/: No such file or directory.

In the words of Daffy Duck when confronted by Elmer Fudd during Wabbit
season, "Should you shoot me now, or should you shoot me later?
"I insist. No, I Demand that you shoot me now!"

Does it get -Any- clearer than this?
