Typical fink-beginners mistake :-) But part of it is Apple's fault
since they did not take enough care of the installation packages
for their X11 and the X11SDK and by default the X11SDK is not
installed when installing the XCode Developertools.

Yes and no. X11 might be a bit better integrated but the
window-manager is closed source. More facts can be found in the
archives of this mailinglist. I at least posted them three times.
But this is my opinion and most ot the time I stand alone with it.

Take a look in the faq:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-packages.php#apple-x11-wants-xfree86

Then reinstall both packages the X11 and the X11SDK at least two
times so that all the packages, headers and libraries get
installed.

sudo rm -rf /etc/X11/
sudo rm -rf /usr/X11R6/
sudo rm -rf /Applications/X11.app/ or in case you use Xfree: sudo
rm -rf /Applications/XDarwin.app/ or drop the X11/XDarwin icon into
the trash.

The stupiest question is the one not asked.

It too would help you if you take a look in the archives of this
list here.
