Oops--replied too quickly there. If you do "fink list x11", you should see x11, x11-shlibs, and x11-dev.

x11-shlibs is provided by system-xfree86-shlibs, which requires the X11 SDK. Try just (re)installing the SDK first.

My standard recommendation is to flush out your old X11 directory by running

sudo rm -rf /usr/X11R6

and then reinstall X11 and the SDK.

On a related note, I have already installed Apple's X11 (Panther) and the XCode installation (but don't recall if I did the SDK or not) and recently installed fink (no problems in that installation). Running fink-virtual-pkgs gave the following:

Package: system-xfree86
Status: install ok installed
Version: 2:4.3-1
description: [placeholder for user installed x11]
provides: x11-shlibs, libgl-shlibs, xft1-shlibs, xft2-shlibs, rman, fontconfig1-
shlibs, xfree86-base-threaded-shlibs

and while x11 is listed, it is part of "x11-shlibs"--should there be a separate "x11" only entry?

Would a SDK installation be all I need to do, or is a total wipe of X11 as suggested above, with reinstallation of fink, etc. the way to go?

Sorry, but I know my question is more a matter of "which step when?".

Thanks.
