Martin,

I did this before mailing the list. So your sage advice was useless :) 
Button masher syndrome!!
I think I've probably messed up x(anything) on this machine to the point 
that I should wipe everything out and start from scratch. Could anyone 
provide advice on doing so...and also on what steps I should take to do this 
correctly the second time? I understand the command line better than fink 
and os x if that makes any difference.
