Correction, I finally found an original 10.5.0 X11User.pkg, and
there the version is indeed 3.0.0. And the kdelibs3-unified package
in the Fink 0.9.0 bindist is linked with libXrandr.2.dylib version
4.0.0.
So it seems to me now that the Fink 0.9.0 bindist is not compatible
with a raw 10.5.0 Leopard system. It needs to be upgraded to at
least 10.5.2. The 10.5.2 upgrade has (as do all later system updates
and all xquartz updates that have libXrandr) libXrandr.2.dylib
version 4.0.0.

Yeah, I didn't keep track of the versions of Xrandr and just went
with what has been working recently. It's still the situation of
"binary was built with more recent X11 than is on the system".
I believe the binary distribution was built soon after 10.5.2 came
out; and It's quite likely that this was the OS version on that
machine.
I guess this is the right diagnosis. Here is how I came into the
problem : 1) A mac machine was given to me, with Mac OS X 10.4.xxx;
2) I upgraded to 10.5.0, withtout upgrading to 10.5.5; 3) I
installed fink. After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.5, konsole was
running fine.

That would indeed make sense: the updates to the OS included the newer
