Yes, Fink is a "package manager" *sic*, it is not a migration tool.

I prefer it to Debian (at least when comparing the
defaults).
Please elaborate, this is a new one to me.

In my view, Fink is great because it can gets people going with free
software to the point where they are ready to let go of the other
stuff.
That sounds like a fantastic effect, but not the effect for many of us. Access to source is important to me, but productivity comes before this. If I am more productive using proprietary solutions, then they are the best solution for the time. By productivity, I am including all "costs" including disaster planning (Apple tends to make your raw data available) and functional extendibility (Apple has good APIs).

It should facilitate this final step.
Why should it? From a technical perspective, I do not see the relationship. Have you tried installing Yellow Dog? or Mandrake? If these are far from meeting your needs, sounds like you may have a great new project (unrelated to Fink really), and I think you would find greater support in the GNU/Linux distribution communities.

Some people want to use free software side-by-side with proprietary
software. I guess I have a different value system from these
people, either that, or my software needs are just different.
I would guess that although many people share your values, they are not likely to be Fink users. I cannot picture how the issue could be s/w needs. "Freedom for all" is a reoccurring theme in the Fink archives, but quite consistently it seems that such conversations have been "more successful" when taken else where. Feel free to email me off list if you would like to respond to the ideological discussion of "freedom" of software -- I do not subscribe to the GNU meaning of free , but Open Source is a fantastic software development model.

Stay passionate,
