If DS is a masochist, this is his own problem :-) Others may prefer 
something more friendly and/or efficient and this is why we're 
discussing the subject.

My position regarding the old API is simple. I don't see good reasons to 
force thousands of existing applications to switch to the new API. It 
may take years to see the popular connectivity drivers supporting the 
new API properly, and an upgrade won't be free (or cheap). And users may 
want to use the new API features (e.g. schemas) sooner rather than later 
(read: without migrating to the new API concept). So my position is that 
we have to support / extend the legacy API as an unavoidable evil, 
unless it's commonly agreed to be a technical overkill (like what 
happened with ODS < 12 support in v3.0).
