Dan,

I installed a set of Hedman Hedders on my '68 400 (don't have the P/N handy
but I can get it if you need it). That allowed about 1/8 of an inch
clearance between the header's collector and my oil filter. Not enough
clearance to get an oil filter wrench on it. I considered that it was
important to be able to remove the oil filter using a standard oil filter
wrench, but that just wasn't in the cards, so I decided to go the remote oil
filter route. I bought a kit from Summit for about $90.

My oldest daughter and I spent a few hours attempting to install it, but
gave up in the end. The problem was rooted in the fact that the part that
attaches to the engine block contains two nipples that are used to attach
the input-output hoses that attach to the remote oil filter. Those nipples
are so long that, when the hoses were attached, the hoses touched the
surface of the header collector, and that is a recipe for a carbecue. We
tried every possible routing opportunity to no avail.

We thought about routing the hoses underneath the collector and back towards
the firewall where the filter was mounted, but that too seemed like a recipe
for disaster. So I 86ed the remote oil filter project. When I need to
change my oil filter in the future, I will simply remove the three bolts
from the adapter, and remove it and the attached filter as a unit. To
reinstall it, I will scrape the RTV from the adapter and apply a fresh bead.
It's cave man I know, but what else can I do?

I have no clearance issues with the Hedman Hedders on the steering box side.
My header is very close to the passenger side engine mount, though. I had
to use an Exacto knife to remove a little of the rubber from the engine
mount to prevent rubbing.

Best of luck. BTW, I was going to mount the remote filter on the firewall.
My car has no A/C or heater at the moment, so that could be an issue with
yours as well.

Bobby

Subject: [FGF] Relocating oil filter on a 455

I know I should have paid more attention in the past when this issue came up
but I did not think that it would apply to me. Can someone give me the run
down on how I go about relocating my oil filter and where to get the parts?
I have a set of Doug's headers that I think are the "shorty" headers. I was
mocking up some stuff today on a friend's firebird and realized that the oil
filter will practially not be able to be removed with the headers installed.
Also, am I going to have issues with the steering gear box?

Thanks,
Dan
