I just replaced my 4-row radiator with a drop-in replacement aluminum
radiator from CI. The cooling system had been effective except at high
speed (~80MPH) on the freeway in hot weather with the AC on; the temp
would eventually reach 240, though it would drop if I killed the AC or
slowed down.
I didn't think it was possible, but now, with the aluminum radiator, my
cooling system is TOO efficient. I have a high-flow 180 degree
thermostat, but while driving around town the temp peaks at 160, and it
takes forever to get that high. If I drive for a while on the freeway,
it will eventually hit 180. I'll exit the freeway and park, and the temp
can hit 200, but when I start back up and start driving around town
again, it drops back to 160. I pulled the thermostat and tested it on
the stove: it opens at 180.
It seems that the flow through the bypass is enough to keep the temp
below the thermostat setting. Has anyone heard of this? Is there a
simple way to reduce the flow through the bypass, or should I just block
off part of the radiator?

Thanks to all for their advice on my highway overheating problems on my 67 326
Bird. I just want to pass along the end results. I decided to buy a direct
replacement Big Block BeCool Eliminator radiator from Jegs. There were a couple
of minor mounting issues which were solved by some trimming of the lower edge
of the shroud and slight radiator mounting flange modifications. The radiator
performs exactly as desired, lowering my highway temps from 235 degrees to 185
degrees. A terrific change, even the the temperature inside the car is greatly
reduced with the air from the cowl vents cool instead of feeling like the
heater was on. I drove the car about 140 miles today, probably the most
enjoyable drive in years.
