My guess is that the systems with return lines were intended to reduce the chance of vapor lock by keeping cool fuel flowing thru the pump. The 400's and V8s with air would have been the hottest running cars.

The interesting thing is that Pontiac installed return lines on 400 cars and those with AC (on the V8's) and not in the others. So what's the difference on a 350 with or without AC as far as the carb is concerned when the AC is off (on the AC car)? Are the pumps with a return designed to put out more volume or pressure? Enquiring minds want to know.
