I have used the viton with mixed results. I used it in a 400 and it worked fine. But went to use it in a 428 and it would not fit correctly. Mostly I have used rope and have not had any leaks. The next two engines I have on the stand are both getting rope. It has worked for me. You just have to do it correctly -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Kelly R Sent: Monday, March 09, 2009 12:31 AM To: 'First Generation Firebird-L' Subject: RE: [FGF] rope rear main seals First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... .. My '76 455 block is just about done at the machinists and I was about to order a new Viton rear main seal to cure what I read is a common problem with Pontiac blocks, a leaky rear rope seals. My machinist found this bulletin through Engine rebuilders association. http://www3.telus.net/public/68bird/engine_ropeseal_tech.htm Which I had not heard about before. Upon measuring my block, sure enough it is slightly different depths at each end of the seal groove. He recommended not using the viton seal and using the rope in my felpro gasket kit. I have read nothing good about these non-asbestos rear main seals. Found this on the net. http://www.streetrodderweb.com/tech/0810sr_bestgasket_rope_seals_ford_y_ bloc k/photo_01.html they make a pontiac sized one. Anybody use it yet?, or have any opinions on the rear main seal problem? Thanks.
