I think that if you are rebuilding an engine and the crank is off, then a rope seal is probably the way to go but if you are replacing one in an engine without totally removing the crank, then the Viton is the way to go (unless you have the issues of uneven depths as shown on that tech bulletin).

I've used it on both 400's and 455's with no issues. You have to make sure you order the correct one since both engines have different size diameters (hey, you never know what people will do!).

I had the same results I used one Viton on a 455 and it leaked I used one
on a 400 and no leaks my suggestion use the rope seal.
