Either HPP or Hemmings MM just had a "how to" on rear seals, I'm pretty sure it was HPP. They covered several types including Viton and rope seals and didn't indicate any of them were problematic if installed correctly. I remember reading that the early replacement for the asbestos ropes were fiberglass and didn't work well. The new rope seals are some sort of graphite and hope fully they work OK. Bob S. I think that if you are rebuilding an engine and the crank is off, then a rope seal is probably the way to go but if you are replacing one in an engine without totally removing the crank, then the Viton is the way to go (unless you have the issues of uneven depths as shown on that tech bulletin). I've used it on both 400's and 455's with no issues. You have to make sure you order the correct one since both engines have different size diameters (hey, you never know what people will do!).
