I would agree with Paul, however a dry chemical extinguisher makes a huge mess
to clean up. I keep a 5 gallon bucket with 3 or 4 water soaked towels so that I
might have a shot at smothering a fire before I have to discharge a fire
extinguisher. And no, I don't advocate dumping water on a gasoline fire - wet
towels are hard to ignite and just give you a chance to knock the fire out.
Also, I install the air filter to help in the event of a backfire while
cranking. It's good to have your static timing real close so the engine can
start without prolonged cranking time, which is hard on a new cam.
Some years ago I had a + cable melt through on a header ('68 GTO) and catch
fire upon initial start-up. I have since paid much closer attention to cable
routing, but I also keep a cable cutter close in case there is a major
electrical issue at the initial break in.
Good luck, and I hope it "fires right up", but not in a literal sense!
David

While doing this, I cannot stress enough how important a fire extinguisher
is to have closely. we had a slight issue with a friend's Turbo'ed M3 when
someone didn't clamp a fuel line tightly and things started to go bad. KEEP
THEM CLOSE!
