I just put new switches in my 69 last weekend and when I looked at the new ones 
the first thing I thought was "these are too long!!!".  But then I looked at 
them closer and saw that they looked "self adjusting".  I tested one first to 
make sure it would push in  before I closed the door.  They did work and the 
barrel did push in properly.  If you are worried about the paint you can chuck 
them up in something and tap them down to the right length.
