I bought a kit (maybe from Eastwood?) that includes the backing pad, rust remover disc (very coarse), stripping discs (medium coarse), and final cleaning discs (light coarse). A couple pads and you can do the whole car. It is slow and a lot of work, but the metal is nice and smooth afterwards.
Aviation Stripper is too messy. I also have used a light flapper disc on an angle grinder and that gets the paint off nicely too. I'll see if I can find the actual kit number and vendor.
