Problem resolved - I found the failed rotor in the distributor, however and it ran well after replacing the rotor/cap, however today it ran poorly again and I replaced the HEI and also noticed it was really low on gas. I added a couple gallons and it runs like a champ, thus I am not sure if it needed the HEI or it was just low on gas. In any event, a $25 HEI replacement after 31 years was not a bad idea - thanks everyone, I can now plow the neighborhood driveways to my hearts content :)

Definitely something to also check if it does have the stock Cat. I've had two cars where the Cat was starting to fail/plug up and both gave similar symptoms. Would idle ok and under light load would be fine but under more of a load or higher RPM's it would bog and fall flat. Both cases once the Cat was changed (in one case eliminated) they both ran like a rapped ape as My dad would say... Wayne may be onto something here... Brett!
