No, from a UI perspective, closing the window using the button in the upper-right corner is best, since that's what everyone's used to from IM clients and the like.
Also, it seems odd to hold off taking away the text until "everyone's done learning the new icons" - aren't you assuming that nobody new uses Firebug from now on?
