I believe I've been successful. After I added the traceConsole.html file and rebuilt the xpi file I got a different message. This time it said it couldn't find the traceLogFrame.html file. So I added that one in there too and, after restarting everything I got a popup window with the title "Tracing: extensions.firebug". In the Options tab I found CACHE and ERRORS and highlighted both of them. After reloading my embedded web page I got over 500 entries in the log window. Now all I have to do is try to figure out what they mean.
