Ha..ha..ha.. Hey I have 6-7 Sun boxes, all running Solaris. My most
expensive machine is my Ultra-1, which I am typing on here. It cost me
$700. It's a very nice powerful machine. If you need some leads on cheap
Sun machines I can give you some leads.
I ran BSD, Linux and SCO on a variety of Intel-based machines for
a number of years and I finally got so fed up with cheap PC-type machines
and their hardware problems, that I just started buying used Sun
equipment. It might not be faster, but it's solid enough that I can set it
up, secure it, then basically go into routine maintenance mode.
There is so much cheaply constructed Intel hardware out there.
It's almost as if it's designed to be thrown away in two years. Even
our Dell Poweredge servers are kind of slapped together in some ways.
I'm sure you know all about network cards that die, power supplies
that die, video cards that die. I decided that it was too much of a hassle. I like
solid
stuff that I can depend on. Alot of vendors like Sun, HP, IBM, even Apple,
seem to put more pride into the quality of construction on their machines.
