Sounds like you have pretty good advice so far. I would consider changing the ftp password but I don't know how lawful that is if its the clients hosting account.
To prevent situations like these I require a down payment to even start and incremental payments as milestones are met. This allows either party to quit early without defaulting on the contract. Further, I host all of my clients sites free for 3 months. It's a nice gesture up front plus the site technically remains my property.
