Yes it needs a preamp even for 6M. As-is the 5000A has about a 19 to 21 dB
noise figure. I have an external DEMI LNA that brings the noise figure down
to several dB but anthing that brings the overall NF down to 6 to 8 dB can
be taken advantage of on 6M when the band is quiet or for EME.
