Have you tried running the F3K on a win XP 32 bit computer?  (the O/S that most 
people are using)

If you have not then your presumption that something is wrong with the software 
has not been proven, and you are wasting everybody's time.  I happened to have 
a diode fail on the firewire port of my F3K and it gave these precise symptoms. 
 It occasionally would happen to connect to the firewire driver but most of the 
time it did not.  All the attitude in the world is not going to fix a blown 
diode, and neither is it a substitute for a systematic approach to trouble 
shooting a problem
