Michael, We sincerely regret that you are having problems with your FLEX-3000 installation on Vista. FlexRadio buys FireWire (IEEE-1394) streaming controller ICs from a chip manufacturer who also writes the FireWire device drivers. FlexRadio is completely dependent on that vendor to provide updates for any changes forced by our friends at Microsoft.
I have just learned that our FireWire chip manufacturer reports that the problem wherein some PC installations fail to recognize the driver signature has been resolved in their latest driver release. This new driver (3.4.2.6300) is now posted on our home page for download. Please give this a try to see if it resolves your problem. You may also want to read Jim Fuller's post about problems with MS security updates and MIDI drivers quoted below: BEGIN QUOTE: " Hi Mike, What I see is the MIDI Drivers are not loading. This can be checked under Devices and Printers with the Flex-Radio plugged in an turned on. You should have two Flex MIDI Drivers and one other Flex Driver. The other driver software can load and show the Flex connected, but not run the radio, as the MIDI Drivers are not loaded. Also, there is often a event entry showing the driver could not load. If this is the case, I would first check that the 1394a Driver for VISTA is of the legacy Version. It can be changed via the update function selecting manual install options. I have had two Vista updates that changed the 1394a driver away from the legacy driver. I have not been able to trace the direct reason, but have found that the updates are related to the MS09-047 security patch. I hope this helps. I have spent the last week here in Portillo Chile with my 3K. With limited internet, I have had time to really focus on trying to get this to work and work well. When I could get the device working, I thought it was great and I was just starting to scratch the surface of the power of this box. The hardware is amazing. However, the software has a long way to go before it truly gets to the full Ham consumer market. Yes, it does run just fine on XP as many have told me. But, if Flex wants to make it to the next step, they either have to claim that running on Vista 64 bit is not fully supported. To ask a customer to disable UAC, run in TEST mode and to run with digitally signed drivers off is great for those of you who want to be beta testers. I have worked with PC's from the initial 8088 when I was with IBM as it was released. I also had to support it for years up to including OS/2. I am far from a virgin PC user and if I can't get this to run stable on a supposedly support platform, then 80% of the Flex market will not be able to as well. With want I know and do with the internet, I refuse to keep in this mode for any time. The exposures to machine infiltration if you are connected to the internet is very large. I suspect that I will return my 3K and wait until it is fully support and tested with the current market trends (ie: what you and I can pick up at Best Buy). Clearly the weakest link is firewire. Firewire and Windows have always had a struggle. If this run on a Mac, I might go buy a Macbook in a second if I know it would work flawlessly. It will be interesting to see how this goes for the coming months.
