I use computers every day and have many dedicated for specific purposes. I also work with a team that provide real time sport results to television. Lots of our tools use Firewire and lots use IP communication (especially in World Cup Ski Racing). I work with windows/linux, etc. every day with real time applications. My goal on this project was to be able to take my 3K with me and have it function on the laptop I take on the road. My latency numbers/graph are always in the green. It is not a cpu load issue. It is likely due to the hardware interface into OS. However, the problem is that the box worked great for 1 week. Then, for some 'strange' OS reason, the Firewire driver actually sees the radio. Great. But the PowerSDR does not see the radio. Why???? For those of you with a logical mind, the fact that the 3K is seen by the driver software tells me that the hardware is not the issue. So, that leaves PowerSDR as the culprit. So, someone tell me how to debug it. Are there logs that show the communication successes and failures. I don't want guessing. I want facts. I don't want to waste my time guessing on how to fix it. I need the tools to understand the failure. So, please, don't blame the OS or the build of PowerSDR unless you have the facts. I shopped for a PC to dedicate specifically to my 5000a. I never considered it as a general-purpose computer for other household needs (I have others for that). It has all the features I need to run current flex software very well and it cost about the same as the optional second rx I added to my radio order. It can sit here and just service the radio for many years - it runs XP Pro and newer op sys features will not be needed for PowerSDR or my other ham programs (also running on it) for a LONG time. I think of it as a 5000a accessory just as if it was an ATU or other radio option, not a household computer. One of the members of this list assembles and sells tweaked inexpensive computers that are apparently stable and work well with PowerSDR.
