could one create a spotlight:
GLfloat spot_direction[] = { -1.0, -1.0, 0.0 };
glLightfv(GL_LIGHT0, GL_SPOT_DIRECTION, spot_direction);
place it on the airplane:
GLfloat position[] = { 0.0, 0.0, 1.5, 1.0 };
then move and rotate it
glTranslatef (lat, lon, elev)
glRotated ((GLdouble) theta, phi, psi, 0.0);
glLightfv (GL_LIGHT0, GL_POSITION, position);
Might want to include a cutoff range beyond which light stops
