Hello Everyone. I've recently gone full time linux running Mandrake 8.2, I've been running linux since 0.91 but not as a full time desktop machine :-). I don't have all the answers, but I generally can find them :-) and sometimes I can also be dense :-). Been programming since the IBM 1401 :-). I love programming and my current obsession is microcontrollers :-).
My primary interest is helos and I belong to VUSN (an m$fs group that flies multi-player on VATSIM) although since going linux full time I haven't been very active. So far just putzed with the C-172 in FG. Mandrake 8.2 came with the last version of FG, which I installed and got working fairly well (like that was rocket science, install RPM, get the joystick working... :). I uninstalled that today and with Curts help was able to get the CVS but seem to be missing the OpenGL development libraries and possibly the glut one(s?) as well, working on trying to resolve this issue before I can build from sources. I have been interested in aviation all my life and have been playing with FS ever since my Apple ][ :-). Most of my time to this point has been in m$fs (around 5K hours that I have kept up with), in a bit of everything finally settling down into big iron military/transports and finally seriously into helos :-). My first real flight was in a Super Connie to Germany in 1957 :-). About 30 years ago I came close to soloing in a C-150 but life got in the way and I never was able to get back to it. I managed to get some time in various private light aircraft and even a few twins, but even that has been a long time ago now. For a good number of years I did a lot of commercial but gave that up due to security concerns and trying to sandwich my 5'11" frame into the cattle cars. My grandfather, father and mother were all in the USAAF and I had an uncle in Naval Aviation :-). Naval Aviation has always had a particular pull for me :-).Nothing like trapping on a carrier or getting a helo down on a bouncing and pitching frigate in nasty weather :-) :-) (xplane and some of that in m$fs as best as m$ will allow). I don't know where I will fit in with the FG project, but I am finally here :-). My thoughts are (delusions of grandur :-) is helos and perhaps multi-player ?!?!!?? but I suppose we will see. Thanks to everyone involved for all the time, effort and enjoyment as well as a way out of m$fs :-)! Take care, Vikki. -- Victoria Welch, WV9K/7, SysAdmin, Embedded Systems Designer.
