On the subject of helos, the autopilot.sf.net project (working on building an autonomous R/C helicopter) has developed a pretty decent helo simulation that works well for testing out their code and accurately models a lot of the subtle effects that you need to worry about when doing flight sensing and control. At one point their project leader offered me his old Rev1 board in return for integrating their helo model with FlightGear. Unfortunately I haven't had the time to look into that seriously, but this could be a good starting point for someone. I would certainly be willing to answer questions relating to the flightgear FDM interface.
