Pre-chewed gum and a scrap of paper torn off your kneepad might also work nicely. I've been thinking of tossing a pad of small Post-It (tm) notes into my bag. Even in VFR, I would like to be able to cover the ASI in case of a blocked pitot tube, or any primary gauge in the case of a local failure.
