It doesn't have to.  If you run glxinfo, you'll see a huge list of X11
visuals with varying configurations: depth buffer depth, alpha depth,
stencil depth, back buffer, etc...  You can get a 16 bit depth buffer
with 32bpp if you want (well, on some cards -- I'm sure there are all
sorts of crazy hardware dependencies here).  I believe that glut is
the code that automatically picks the depth buffer precision to match
the color buffers.
