That would be possible but it's the sort of thing you'd have to do 
deliberately, if unintentionally.

The smoothing glitches could well be due to the normal anomalies.  I've been 
pretty reliably informed that the face normal shouldn't really affect the 
appearance of a poly, and this makes sense to me - in the 3d package I use it 
isn't and the only time it is an issue is when I'm trying to do some tricky 
materials - sub-surface scattering, and stuff like that.  In FG's renderer 
though, it does seem to important at the geometry level.
