Maybe I'm confused: why do we care?  The "0" gear is the first one
listed.  If it happens to be the nose gear, then the 3D modeller will
use .../gear[0]/... to animate it, etc...

The only time we need to worry is when synchronizing the number
across FDMs, and even then it's just a convention: make sure than
gear N in the YASim configuration matches the corresponding gear in
JSBSim.

Notions like left, right, nose, main, etc... don't seem relevant to
me.
